Golfers battle frost and wintry weather
Thursday, 14th February 2013.
Due to heavy frost, the Ladies Stableford at Haverhill Golf Club on Saturday, February 9, became a non-qualifier as the competition had to be played on temporary greens.
Pauline Calmet was the winner with 28pts, in second place was Gerrie Wheatley with 26pts and in third place Jackie Condon with 24pts.
On Sunday the Junior Medal was played. Hayden Durrant was the overall winner, and despite the wintry conditions, he had a very commendable round of 81-10-71.
In second place was Michael Perrett with 80-5-75 (lowest gross) and in third place Daniel Walker with 104-27-77. The best score for the girls was Nicole Pike who finished in fourth place overall with a nett score of 80.
Haverhill ladies travelled to Bury St Edmunds for their first round match of the Mail on Sunday competition.
It was a disappointing day for Haverhill, and Bury made the most of the home advantage to secure a place in the next round of this nationally run event.
Haverhill’s lady captain, Sheila Price, thanked the teams for a brave effort having to battle the elements, and wished the Bury ladies all the best for their next match.
Southwold hosted The Suffolk Winter Alliance on Sunday. In all, 46 players, including four professionals, took part in very cold and windy conditions.
The professional prize was won by Danny Barton of Felixstowe Golf Centre with a score of 75. Southwold professional, Robin Mann, finished in second place with 80 and Kevin Earp of Bury Golf Range finished in third place with 82.
The Four Ball Better Ball Stableford was won by the pairing of John Williams (Stoke-by-Nayland) and David Yates (Braintree) with 40 points.
