Golfers' valiant campaign ends in fourth round
Wednesday, 2nd May 2012.
On Saturday, April 28, Haverhill golfers played in the fourth round of their Mail on Sunday competition.
The team were drawn away against Welwyn Garden City and in very difficult conditions, Haverhill battled hard, just falling short on the last few holes.
The match results were (Haverhill names first): Eamonn Bareham halved his match with Jamie Egerton, Jack Bligh beat Lewis Norcott by 2 holes, Bob Spittle lost 3&2 to Andy Collie, Andy Fish lost 2&1 to Ian Harper, Gerry Scott lost 6&5 to Martin Mountford. The overall result was a win for Welwyn Garden City 3½ to 1½.
Afterwards Haverhill’s vice-captain Gordon Price thanked all the players for a valiant effort to get through to the fourth round of a national competition, where over 1,000 golf clubs take part.
Haverhill’s Chris Vince & Dave Quinney Jnr travelled to Woodbridge on the same day to defend their 2011 title in the 36-hole, Suffolk Amateur Foursomes Championship.
The pair fought well, however it was not enough to match the pairing of L Staff & M Mann from Aldeburgh & Woodbridge, who scored a gross 75-72-147. Vince & Quinney were six shots off the pace with 76-77-153.
Haverhill seniors’ season continued with two more away fixtures, the first at Diss on April 19, where they lost 2-6, followed by a match against Braintree on April 23, where they had a disappointing result, losing ½-7½.
Thankfully their fortunes were reversed in time for the first Beaumont Trophy fixture of the season, which was played at home on Monday, April 30, against St Audrys (near Ipswich).
The matches were all very close, but the home advantage enabled Haverhill to eventually overcome the visitors by four holes.
The full results were (Haverhill team first): Keith McCallum & Dick Sisman halved their match against Bob Cook & Adrian Knights, Paul Wallace & David Parsons halved their match against Ash Keeble & Aly Andrews, Syd Gould & Bob Hammett won 3 up against John Richardson & David Mayhew and Mike Barnham & John Ward won 1 up against Eddie Barnes & Clive Andrews.
