Golf club's mixed open competition is close fought

Haverhill Golf Club hosted its Mixed Open on Thursday, August 19. With a field of 102 competitors, representing 25 clubs the format was four ball better ball, played off 7/8th handicap.
It was a very closely run competition. Winning, with a score of 43pts, were Hilary and Francis Fitch from Bury St Edmunds. In second place with 42pts on countback were Marilyn and Mike Parmenter from Braintree, from third place Alan and Diane Cunningham from Newton Green with 42pts.
The winners of the back nine were Nigel and Caroline Harris of Braintree with 21pts, and for the front nine, also with 21pts, winning on countback, were Sylvia and Raymond Shaw of Menzies.
The ladies nearest the pin was won by Gina Doyle of Harwich & Dovercourt and for the men Peter Page of Elsenham.
Haverhill’s club captain David Chapman and lady captain Sally Price made the prize presentation and thanked all those who helped organise the day, with special thanks to Doug and Stella Renyard.
The Ladies August Stableford (NSCR Spoon) was played on Wednesday, August 18. Winning, with a score of 33pts, was Theresa Spittle on countback from second place Geraldine Wheatley. In third place was Linda Macfarlane with 32pts.
The men played their August Stableford on Wednesday, August 18 and the overall winner was Mick Dalena with a fantastic score of 46pts.
The full results were: Division One, 1 Eric Armstrong with 43pts; 2 Lewis Whiting with 42pts; 3 Stuart King with 37pts.
Division Two, 1 Mick Dalena 46pts; 2 Michael Perrett with 43pts; 3 Trevor Broomfield with 40pts.
Division Three, 1 Ken Johnson with 43pts, 2 Roger Hartley with 42pts and 3 Peter Knight with 39pts.
The seniors match at home against Towerlands on Friday, August 20, resulted in a convincing 6-2 win for the hosts.
On Saturday, August 20, Haverhill held its popular social golf event, Foxes & Rabbits, where golfers and non-golfers join forces to compete over ten holes.
The golfers play from tee to green with the rabbits putting out. It was a well supported, fun day of golf with some interesting scores!
Winning the rabbits competition, with an incredible 17 putts, was Joanne Gauntlett, who partnered vice-president, Dennis Harkness.
Runner up for the rabbits was Mrs M Poppy who partnered the winning fox, Trevor Shipp. The runner-up in the foxes’ competition was Dan Wilkins.
