Golden hello for employers to take on apprentices

Monday, 1st February 2010.

A new apprenticeships scheme, offering small and medium-sized employers a wage subsidy for the first six months, has just been launched.

The scheme is being delivered by West Suffolk College and St Edmundsbury Borough Council on behalf of the West Suffolk and East Babergh Local Strategic Partnerships (LSPs), a partnership of public services, voluntary organisations and businesses.

Under the scheme, employers in the public, voluntary and private sectors can work together to ‘share’ an apprentice.

For example, a landscape gardener might need an extra pair of hands but not be able to give an apprentice a full week’s work.

This scheme might match them up with a nature reserve or a council department which could take the apprentice for the rest of the week.

Some young people would benefit from apprenticeships that span different employers, particularly if they are not fully decided on a specific career or sector.

Training fees for apprentices under 19 are fully funded and the Government is also offering an additional £2,500 ‘Golden Hello’ to employers taking on a new apprentice before the end of March.

Michelle Gibson, a senior work-based learning advisor at West Suffolk College, is co-ordinating the scheme.

She said: “I’ll be happy to talk to any employer who wants to know more about how we can help them. Just give me a call at West Suffolk College.”
