Gold medal-winners and top athletes come to town

Monday, 6th December 2010.

Members of the gold medal-winning GB boccia team will be offering a taster session and giving a demonstration session to youngsters at Haverhill Leisure Centre on Monday, December 20.

The session will be part of the centre’s free annual Go For Gold event, sponsored by Deloitte, where youngsters can try out Olympic sports and meet athletes who have competed at the Games.

Open to youngsters aged seven to 14, the free event, will enable children to try out sports including boccia, cycling, badminton, table tennis and gymnastics.

Boccia is ball game for people in wheelchairs, where the aim is to get close to a target ball, or jack, as in bowls.

The GB Boccia team will also take part in a question and answer session along with PC Simon Bourne, from Bury St Edmunds, who recently competed in the Ultraman challenge, the world’s toughest physical challenge (swimming six miles, cycling 260 miles and running a double marathon in just 30 hours) in Hawaii last month.

Simon will be joined by Haverhill paralympian wheelchair basketball player Caroline Maclean; world triathlete champion Barbara Levett, from Steeple Bumpstead; and Commonwealth Games gymnast Charlotte McKenna, from Helions Bumpstead, who will also be giving a demonstration during the day.

British Cycling will be organising a mini racing tournament and giving out medals and goodie bags to youngsters. PC Bourne, who was recently made an Abbeycroft sporting ambassador, will be taking part.

The event, from 10am to 3pm, will end with a prize-giving when children who have scored the most points in each of the sports will receive a medal from the athletes.

Amelia Epton, Abbeycroft’s sports development officer, said: “This is a unique opportunity for youngsters to come and have a try at some of the sports that will feature in London 2012.

"We are very fortunate to have the fantastic GB boccia team, Simon, Charlotte, Caroline and Barbara with us for the day to encourage the children and give them an insight into what it takes to represent your country at a national and international level.

"Special thanks go to Deloitte, which has sponsored the event, allowing us to offer it free of charge to youngsters in Haverhill.”

Adults will not miss out at the Go For Gold event. Two free cycle rides for adults will take place led by experienced riders at 10am and 2.30pm, timed so that parents can drop off their children at the event and pick them up in the afternoon.

The route will take cyclists along Haverhill’s disused railway line at a steady pace and last 30 minutes. Bikes and helmets will be supplied.
