Girls to get new soccer centre
Thursday, 12th July 2001.
A NEW coaching centre for girls is being set up at Haverhill in conjunction with Colchester United.
The former Haverhill Rovers girls and women's team will move over to the new Centre, to be based at the astroturf pitch at Haverhill Leisure Centre. They will be known as Haverhill U's Girls Soccer or HUGS.
Lesley Wheeler, who founded the highly-successful girls and womens teams in 1996, said they had no dispute with Haverhill Rovers, but needed to be part of a professional set-up to allow the girls to continue to compete at a higher level.
The girls teams have always played in the Essex league and several of them already attend Colchester United's school of excellence. Now the same level of professional coaching will be available to all players, not just a few.
The coaching Centre will be launched on July 26 from 6-9pm at the astroturf pitch and anyone aged from eight years upwards, beginners or experienced players, can go along.
"We hope this is going to be a really exciting venture for the girls, there is nothing like it around here. Since we started our girls have always done really well and won everything, but they need professional coaching to compete at the higher level.
"So many professional clubs have teams now the girls are up against sides like West Ham and Leyton Orient. Our girls want to be professionals, we have three who are having trials for Arsenal this Sunday.
"They are prepared to travel around the country to to play and they probably have a more realistic chance than the lads, because there are not that many players," said Sharp.
The centre will be looking for major sponsorship to get it up and running, but hopes to eventually be self financing.
There will be two women's teams and at least three youth teams, while a new well-qualified manager is also needed for the senior first team -- which will be playing in the Premier Division next season.
Anyone interested in the Coaching Centre or the manager's job should contact Secretary Christine Harris on (01284) 762806 or Lesley Wheeler on (01440) 703155.
