Girl's soccer team nets help
Thursday, 18th January 2001.
YOUNG female footballers at Haverhill have finally got their goalposts moved thanks to a generous local firm which did the work for free.
Haverhill Rovers Under-11 girls' team raised £250 to buy mini-goalposts and another £250 to pay to put them up at Puddlebrook.
Then the team moved to Chalkstone Playing Fields because the Puddlebrook pitches were so muddy.
But the team heard that St Edmundsbury Borough Council would charge £400 to move the posts.
After a story in which the club protested about the £100-a-hole charge, local company Haverhill Fencing contacted the team and agreed to do the job for nothing. Another company, Pave the Way of Kedington, also offered to help.
Ashley Smith, manager of the team, says the girls had played their first game with the posts up and it meant they only had to put the nets up rather than struggling to put up and take down plastic posts every week, come rain or shine.
