Girl long jumper qualifies for national schools competition
Friday, 29th June 2012.
A local girl long jumper has been selected to take part in a national schools competition after first-time success at a regional level.
Rhiannon Howard (14) from Sturmer, competed in her first inter-county athletics competition, representing Suffolk Schools last weekend in Peterborough.
The Anglian Schools' Championships is a competition between a county quartet of the best under 15 and under 17 athletes from Norfolk, Cambridgeshire, Lincolnshire and Suffolk.
Rhiannon had come into this championship as a complete novice at this level of competition but showed her true competitive spirit and growing expertise as a long jumper by winning the under 15s girls long jump with a personal best of 4.90m.
As a result she has now been selected to compete for Suffolk Schools in the English Schools Championships at Gateshead in July.
Rhiannon is a year nine student at Stour Valley Community School. As well as competing in athletics, she is also a gymnast training with Haverhill Gymnastics Club, won the Bury two-piece competition earlier in the month and came third in the Bury competition two weeks ago.
