Gerry dons chain again
Thursday, 1st June 2000.
ELEVEN years after he was made Haverhill's first town mayor, Gerry Kiernan has taken on the role again.
The 42-year-old councillor, from Sturmer, is looking forward to his year in office - and says he expects it to be much busier than the first time around.
Coun Kiernan, who was leader of St Edmundsbury Borough Council for four years until last May, said: “I think it is going to be busier as the role has built up over time and there are a lot more engagements.
“Before, the town council had only just started and people were not used to having a mayor.
“The four years as St Edmundsbury leader was very intense and basically took up all the spare time I had.
“I am looking forward to being mayor again as it is so long since I have done it.
“I hope to meet a lot of local organisations and find out how they work and what the town council had do to help them.”
