Genzyme aids scouts to carry on camping
Friday, 20th August 2010.
First Haverhill Scout Group has a new first aid tent, thanks to Genzyme, the bio-technology firm which has a plant in the town.
The new tent replaces one that is over 30 years old and will be available at the numerous outdoor activities organised by the group.
“Under Scout Association regulations, we have to provide a separate, dedicated first aid facility at all of our events, in case of any eventuality.” said David Miller, scout leader.
“Experience indicates that the primary use of the tent will be to provide a quiet place to rest and recuperate after a grazed knee or a minor bump."
Duncan Batty, group scout leader, went further. “In these times of economic cutbacks it is humbling that an organisation such as Genzyme is willing to support local charities and appreciates the good work we are trying to achieve in developing the full potential of young people in the Haverhill area.”
Sarah Lester, logistics co-ordinator at Genzyme, a member of staff at Genzyme and also one of the local scout leaders at 1st Haverhill Scout Group, said: "The Genzyme community relations team helped us immensely by providing us with a new first aid tent, ensuring the scouts are able to continue to partake in many activities and camps.
"Because of the new tent, we will have the space to administer first aid when there is an accident, which may not have been possible before, so this is a great asset to the group.”
Currently, the 1st Haverhill Scout Group have over 100 young people on their books, both girls and boys, ranging in age from 6-18.
There are waiting lists in all sections of the group, which could be partially reduced with more adult help. If you would like to help or want to know more about volunteering please ring Duncan Batty on 01440 707317.
