Gambling guys and dancing dolls are in town

Monday, 18th October 2010.

Haverhill-based Centre Stage Company brings its major production of the year to the stage this week at Haverhill Arts Centre in the form of one of the most popular of all musicals - Guys And Dolls.

The show opens tomorrow evening (Tuesday) and runs each evening until Saturday, when there is a matinee and an evening performance.

The cast and crew of over 40 have been working on the show since June, and spent the weekend at the Arts Centre installing and refining the large set, the costumes and the technical details before being joined by the orchestra for tonight's final rehearsal.

The show is based on the stories of Damon Runyon, set in a mythical Broadway of shady characters and the girls who try to turn them from their endless gambling, and also seem to lose their clothes in the process.

It features a host of well-known songs, including Luck Be A Lady, Sit Down You're Rockin' The Boat, Take Back Your Mink, I've Never Been In Love Before, I'll Know and If I Were A Bell.

The four leading roles are played by two Centre Stage regulars and two who are new to the Haverhill stage.

Nathan Detroit, the fixer who spenmds the show trying to find places for his illegal crap game, is played by Andy Letcher, and Miss Adelaide, the doll he has been engaged to for 14-years, by Jane Baillie, both familiar to Haverhill audiences.

The top gambler of them all, Sky Masterson, provides Tom Ogden with his first role for Centre Stage, while the Salvation Army girl Sarah Brown, who changes his life, is played by another newcomer to the group, Luan Hockley.

The shows start at 7.30pm each night, with the Saturday matinee at 2.30pm. Tickets from £8 are available from the Arts Centre box office on 01440 714140, or online from the Arts Centre website http://www.haverhillartscentre.co.uk/events-10-october.htm.
