Funds still available for the march towards pedestrianisation
Tuesday, 28th September 2010.
Funding constraints which, it had been feared, could scupper plans to move Haverhill's Friday market to High Street, will not affect the progress towards pedestrianisation in the town.
At last week's Haverhill Town Council meeting, town clerk Gordon Mussett said he had heard there was a moratorium on spending on traffic regulation signs from Suffolk County Council, which could prevent the high street proposals going ahead.
But Haverhill county councillor Anne Gower has been told the funding issues, which have led to some schemes being dropped altogether, would not affect either the market moving proposal or town centre pedestrianisation.
Money was available for these schemes, including minor works required in Quakers Lane, Cllr Gower was told.
The proposals for the Friday market have been advertised and comments and objections received.
Once the pedestrianisation order has been advertised, any minor objections could be taken to rights of way committee along with the Friday market proposals. All being well, the two orders can then be introduced at the same time.
"I understand that there is an objection which is still being worked on to see if it can be overcome," said Cllr Gower.
There is also money still available for some waiting restriction and one-way requests for roads within Haverhill.
