From the streets of London to a stage near you
Friday, 1st October 2010.
One of the great folk-singing stars will be appearing in Haverhill next month.
To coincide with the release of his first studio album of original material in ten years, folk legend Ralph McTell embarks on the Somewhere Down The Road UK tour, arriving at Haverhill Arts Centre on Thursday, November 18 at 8pm.
Featuring the McTell trademarks of dazzling guitar playing and complex, poetic lyrics, Somewhere Down The Road looks set to become another landmark album for McTell - in his 45th year as a professional musician.
Tickets for the show are £20 and available from the box office, 01440 714140 and the website, www.haverhillartscentre.co.uk.
Perhaps most famous for his 1969 song Streets Of London, in this album McTell also features tracks which examine and celebrate humanity in its many guises.
Somewhere Down The Road was inspired by anecdotes and ideas from sources as diverse as the 18th century writer Dr Johnson, blues icon Robert Johnson, Cajun, traditional folk and even the film Citizen Kane.
Standout songs include A Kiss In The Rain, a tribute to Bert Jansch's seminal guitar playing and arrangement of the traditional song Blackwaterside.
"I've never been a speedy writer, but this may well be the longest I've ever taken to bring a collection of songs to the studio," says McTell with a wry smile.
"I hope listeners will enjoy this work which has seen a number of incarnations during the last decade!"
