From now on it's a ticket if you park illegally in town centre

Monday, 11th July 2011.

The blitz on illegal parking in Haverhill town centre has been cranked up a notch with the police moving to enforcement now that double yellow lines have been repainted.

Already five enforcement tickets have been issued and police have announced there will be no more warnings.

PC Will Wright of Haverhill Safer Neighbourhood Team said: "We have issued hundreds of warning notices over the past five weeks. The lines have been repainted and are clearly visible.

"From now on we'll be out there. We've heard all the excuses like 'I've only been five minutes', 'I was just at the bank' etc, but the law is the law.

"Yellow lines are there for a reason so don't abuse them - and if you do, don't be shocked if you get a ticket."

PC Wright said reaction throughout the town had been favourable. "I attended a residents' group only this morning on the Clements and they were all in favour of the action," he said.

The police have taken action after a public meeting of the SNT saw residents raising the issue as their top priority.

"I think people across the town have just had enough," said PC Wright.

Queen Street will also be targeted after the barriers open and, although there are no double yellow lines there for aesthetic reasons, prohibitions still exist.

Parking on pavements and causing an obstruction is illegal and police will be ticketing people for that as well.

Although disabled blue badge holders are allowed to park on yellow lines, they too can be ticketed for parking on pavements.
