Friends at school mourn Katie
Thursday, 20th September 2001.
TRIBUTES are being paid to 15-year-old Haverhill schoolgirl Katie Burge, who died during the summer holidays.
Katie, of Lophams Close, Haverhill, was due to start this term as a Year 11 pupil at Castle Manor Upper School in Haverhill, studying for her GCSEs.
Sadly, she became ill at the start of the holidays and when she was admitted to Addenbrooke’s Hospital it was discovered that she had an aggressive form of cancer, poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma. Katie died in August.
Julie Winterman, head teacher at Castle Manor, said the school was looking at ways to pay tribute to Katie.
“Katie was a talented young lady who had a full and happy life. She will be remembered for her compassion and her courage,”
Mrs Winterman said.
A book was opened at the school for students and staff to say goodbye to Katie. There will also be a special fund-raising day to support cancer cell research. Another initiative is an annual prize for literature at the school in Katie’s name.
Katie was an enthusiastic reader, who reed at least eight books a week and loved her English class.
