Freeze likely on large part of council tax
Thursday, 3rd February 2011.
County councillors have agreed a council tax freeze in Suffolk this year.
The county council imposes by far the largest part of our council tax bills because it is responsible for the most expensive services - including schools, roads and the fire service.
On Tuesday, the council's cabinet agreed a budget based on keeping its council tax the same as last year.
This will allow it to take advantage of a Government incentive worth £7.2million, available as long as councils don't exceed the 2.5 per cent increase limit set.
But the council is also aiming to save £40million through cuts and its new strategic direction of divesting itself of some services such as libraries and school crossing patrols.
The shortfall has been caused by the council suffering a cut in its funding from Government.
St Edmundsbury Borough Council is also aiming for a council tax freeze, which will be discussed at its cabinet meeting on February 16.
