Free car parking weekends in Christmas run-up
Wednesday, 27th November 2013.
Parking in car parks in Haverhill managed by St Edmundsbury Borough Council will be free for the two Saturdays before Christmas.
The 'free after three' on Fridays will be complemented by free parking on Saturdays, December 14 and 21.
There is no charge for parking in Haverhill on Sundays, making the whole weekend from 3pm on Friday to 8am on Monday, December 13-16, and from 3pm Friday to 8am on Monday, December 20-23, free.
Cllr Alaric Pugh, the council's cabinet member for economic development, said: “The two weekends before Christmas are some of the busiest shopping periods of the year.
"Rather than face an exhausting expedition elsewhere, we want to give Haverhill people a chance to discover all that is great about their local high street at Christmas.
"The ticket machines in all our Haverhill car parks will be turned off from 3pm on Friday andon again at 8am on Monday on both weekends. We look forward to welcoming customers to merry Haverhill.”
Cllr Anne Gower, cabinet member for Haverhill, said: “It’s not just about shopping. We have a terrific community spirit and simple things like the lights, the displays, good will and knowing how to enjoy ourselves are what make Christmas.
"Just a gesture like this welcome to the town can make an impression and I am very pleased that we are doing this.”
