Former MP in town to become patron of addiction charity
Tuesday, 25th February 2014.
Drug and alcohol addiction support charity Open Road will officially welcome Lord Risby of Haverhill as its patron at a special event to be held on Friday at their centre in Haverhill.
Open Road is a leading charity of the kind in East Anglia with over 23 years’ experience in the field and has a dedicated centre in Haverhill.
Lord Risby, formerly Haverhill's MP Richard Spring, will be the guest of honour and will be joined by Vicky Ford MEP, town mayor Cllr Roger André and deputy mayor Cllr Maureen Byrne, Cllr Anne Gower St Edmundsbury Borough Council cabinet member for housing Suffolk County Council member for Haverhill North, along with Lynda Bradford, head of health improvement at Public Health Suffolk and Andy Eley, chief operating officer from the Clinical Commissioning Group for Suffolk.
Lord Risby will take on the role of patron of Open Road and will become a strong supporter of the organisation and an advocate for strengthening the substance misuse agenda.
He said: “I was delighted to accept the role of patron of Open Road. All communities include individuals with problems of addiction, and most particularly drugs, which can do so much damage to young people in particular, and their families.
"Those of us who are concerned with this very much welcome the activities of Open Road in Haverhill, which I completely support."
Lord Risby invited Mrs Ford to visit the centre and see first-hand the work that is being done locally to reduce the harmful impact of drugs and alcohol on people and society.
Mrs Ford said: “Open Road is an inspirational example of the successful, collaborative work being done in Essex and Suffolk including the Norfolk & Suffolk Probation Trust, to help change lives and reduce reoffending in our region.”
Cllr Gower said: "I am delighted that Lord Risby of Haverhill has agreed to be patron of Open Road which brings a valuable service to those who have a drug addiction in the town and surrounding area.
"Not having to go to Bury or beyond for help is a great advantage to those people who do want to seek help. I am also pleased to see Vicky Ford MEP at Open Road as I know she has a genuine interest in the wellbeing of Haverhill and its people.”
Open Road offers a wide range of services including structured day programmes and counselling.
Its approach is to support people on their journey to recovery – this means getting them well and addiction-free but also helping them get back into normal life as useful members of their community and wider society.
Staff, volunteers and service users will be on hand to welcome guests and tell them lots more about the services on offer.
Sarah Wright, Open Road’s chief executive, said: “We are delighted that Lord Risby will become a patron of Open Road and look forward to working with him to raise awareness of the issues surrounding substance misuse.”
