Footpath campaign is taken to council
Thursday, 28th October 1999.
A COUNCILLOR has launched a campaign for a footpath along a half-mile stretch of road he believes is becoming increasingly dangerous.
Coun Tony Sutton met Jerry Massey, director of planning and transportation for St Edmundsbury Borough Council, to show him where he thought the footpath was needed at Haverhill Road, Kedington.
Coun Sutton pointed out there had already been a number of accidents along the road over the years, including one where a woman was killed after leaving the Grampian Country Foods social club.
He said there was a danger to walking schoolchildren, workers going to the Grampian factory and people visiting the social club, especially at night, and the development of the nearby former Risbridge Hospital site with 60 new homes was making the problem worse.
"While I am fully aware of the costs that may be involved, I believe something needs to be done," said Coun Sutton.
Mr Massey said Kedington Parish Council had raised concerns with Suffolk County Council but it was the first time the issue had been raised with the borough council.
He said he would ensure it was brought before the council's Planning Committee to see whether a path could be provided and what it would cost.
Mr Massey said the scheme fitted in with the council's Village Environmental Enhancement Scheme, which helped finance schemes in rural areas to encourage sustainable transport by walking or cycling.
