Flood warning for Suffolk tonight as three inches of rain is forecast

Thursday, 5th July 2012.

The Environment Agency and the Met Office have issued a warning about localised flash flooding in Suffolk caused by heavy rainfall expected overnight tonight until midday tomorrow.

The county could receive 60-70mm of rain in some areas. Surface water is expected which could cause disruption during the Friday morning rush hour and on minor roads. Disruption to travel and longer journey times are likely.

People are being advised to check weather and media reports regularly and in an emergency, call 999.

Babergh and Mid Suffolk district councils are working together to prepare by carrying out door-knocking to properties that were affected by flooding in May to warn them about the localised flooding that could take place. They have also published information on their websites and on their facebook pages and twitter feeds.

Their grounds maintenance team are also checking all water courses and drains to remove any rubbish that could block them in anticipation of the heavy rain.

Suffolk County Council’s school closure website will be being updated in the morning: http://schoolclosures.suffolk.gov.uk/
