Flats set to win approval
Wednesday, 4th December 2002.
A SCHEME to build 24 flats on the site of the Inisfail Laundry in Haverhill is expected to get the go-ahead, despite objections by Haverhill Town Council.
St Edmundsbury Borough Council's Development Control committee meeting on Thursday is asked to approve the plan for the Camps Road site subject to conditions, including that a financial contribution is made to education facilities. The laundry plans to move to new premises elsewhere in the town.
Haverhill Town Council had commented the plan was an over development of the site, that it lacked affordable/social housing, lacked parking in an already congested area and had no disabled access or lift.
One neighbour had written expressing concern about boundary fencing and the need for a retaining wall due to the change in level.
Last month the plan was deferred by councillors so that further negotiations could take place with regard to parking and disabled access. A report to the committee said amended plans had added three parking spaces.
However, this was at the expense of landscaping and amenity space. It was decided that, as the site was close to the town centre and public transport, the original parking provision would be more appropriate.
