First nightclub is set to open

By Jo Deeks on Thursday, 7th October 1999.

HAVERHILL'S first nightclub is set to open a week today after a £300,000 renovation of the former Coop in the town centre.
Rush Nightclub owner Martin Noble has installed up-to-the-minute equipment and plush fittings. The opening has been delayed for several weeks while emergency fire exit stairs have been rebuilt to meet specifications.
The club can take 820 people and has three bars and an American-style diner where nothing costs more than £5. Bar prices will generally be 20-30p above pub prices.
The dance floors are made of sprung polished French chestnut and include raised platforms with bullet-proof lit sections. Sound checks with environmental health staff show even at full blast the music can only just be heard outside.
There are 11 CCTV cameras and the complex has created around 50 jobs, including nine for doormen. It will initially open from 9.30pm-2am on Thursday, Friday and Saturday for over 18s, with no-alcohol under 18s night on Tuesdays.
Mr Noble said he was optimistic the club would be a great success.
"We are saying to people come along and have a good time. If you are silly you will get ejected and you won't be let back in. Don't turn up drunk and we will have a dress code of smart casual clothes," he said.
He added: "We are very anti drugs. If we find people dealing drugs we will arrest them and hand them over to the police."
The opening night will feature DJ Johnny Kipper from Sky television's Greece Uncovered. Admission will cost £5 before 11pm and £7 after that.
