Fire service issue barbeque safety advice
Monday, 20th May 2002.
Suffolk Fire Service are advising people to play safe this summer especially when barbeques are involved.
Martyn Thorpe, Community fire safety officer, said: “As the warmer weather approaches we should be aware of the potential fire risks involved with barbecues.”
He provided the following tips to ensure a successful and low risk summer:
*Stand portable barbecues on an even surface and make sure they are away from houses, fences or sheds.
*Remember to light your charcoal an hour before you start cooking.
*Don’t overfill the barbecue with charcoal.
*Use only approved lighter fuels and never use petrol.
*If your barbequing keep the alcohol to a minimum
*Seal your charcoal bag afterwards – it will be easier to light next time
*Be careful when barbequing fatty meats – don’t add oil to them
*Never poor petrol onto the barbeque
*When you’ve finished with the barbeque put the coals out with water and leave them for at least two hours before disposing of them
