Festive fun at switch-on
Thursday, 6th December 2001.
A DAZZLING display of Christmas lights was switched on in Haverhill last week to help get the festive season off to a lively start.
Dick Whittington, the legendary Lord Mayor of London, who will be appearing in the town’s panto in January, joined Mayor Eric Bowman for the switch-on ceremony in the Market Square.
Haverhill Town Council has spent £2,000 this year on new features.
The cost of putting up the lights will be hoped that businesses will at least equal last year’s contribution of £1,650 towards it.
Town Clerk Gordon Mussett said St Edmundsbury Borough Council bore a small percentage of the cost of putting up the lights, which cost far less than other neighbouring towns.
He said: “We think we get quite a good deal on the lights. It is another thing that helps market the town and raise the profile.”
Father Christmas was also present at the switch on ceremony and Haverhill Round Tablers attended with their Christmas Sleigh.
Mrs Holly Berry and her Christmas helpers distributed magic, music, gifts and hilarity.
