Fears that Braintree plan may restrict Haverhill
Friday, 11th June 2010.
A future plan for the Braintree district which includes part of Haverhill Business Park are raising protests from St Edmundsbury planners, who say it could limit Haverhill's development.
Braintree District Council is currently going through the process of putting together its Local Development Framework (LDF), about a year behind St Edmundsbury's.
The LDF core strategy puts in place certain key policies about development in the district, and St Edmundsbury, as a neighbouring authority, has been consulted for its views.
The only area of interest for St Edmundsbury is the border close to Haverhill and how it affects the town's future development, because the LDF will govern development until 2031.
In a report to St Edmundsbury's sustainable development panel meeting next week, St Edmundsbury planning and policy services manager Ian Poole recommends taking issue with Braintree on two points.
He says he has concerns about the ability of the policies to enable 'appropriate sustainable growth' to take place within the area of Haverhill that is located within Essex.
He is also worried that cash from developers' contributions for any developments in this area should be able to be used by St Edmundsbury, for local infrastructure here, and not be pocketed by Braintree.
He says: "The core strategy does not recognise these issues and this may limit the ability for the town to develop in the most appropriate way. It is therefore considered that representations should be made to Braintree District Council on this basis."
