Father and son are walking tall
Thursday, 27th July 2000.
It was the journey of a lifetime for father and son race-walkers, Mick and Andrew Graham, who took part in an international event in Ireland and came home with gold and silver medals.
Andrew, 10, was the youngest competitor in the Ireland v England event at Dublin, and entered through his club, Belgrave Harriers, as he was too young to represent his country. Athletes from 10 nations took part in the last international event before the Olympics, trying to achieve qualifying times.
In the 1km event against 11 and 12-year-olds, Andrew finished second in five minutes, the first
time he had ever beaten the third-placed English boy. He also won a gold medal in the team event.
Mick Graham rushed to the start line after judging four events and finished fifth overall in the 3km veterans event for over-40s,-50s and -60s.
He received the silver medal as the second finisher in the over-50s section and the gold for the team event.
He was the first Englishman across the line, beaten only by Irish record holder Tom King and has again been asked to take part in the World Veterans event in Australia next summer.
