Fund raisers will take time out from a madcap event to pay their respects to those involved in the tragic events in Japan, when they take part in a St Nicholas Hospice Care charity event in Haverhill in May.

The Hospice’s Sumo Run – Give it Large! will see Recreation Ground transformed into a sea of sumo wrestlers, as fund raisers prepare to walk, jog, run, waddle, shuffle and wobble their way around a one-mile course, while wearing eye-catching inflatable sumo suits.

But in the light of recent events in Japan, a minute’s silence will be held at the event for all those affected by the tragic earthquake and ensuing tsunami.

Jenny Baskett, the hospice’s events and challenges fund raiser, hopes individuals and teams will sign up for the Sumo Run, which takes place on Bank Holiday Monday, May 2.

“The suits may not be the most flattering attire, but they cover a multitude of sins,” she said. “This is not a time to be self-conscious - instead throw vanity to the wind, sign up and join the ranks of sponsored sumos preparing for what will be a very whacky race.

“This is the Hospice’s first ever sumo run, so we are hoping for people with a sense of adventure and fun to take part and make it an event to remember.”

Entry costs £20 and each participant must raise a minimum of £80 sponsorship. Each runner will get to keep their own sumo suit, which they are also welcome to accessorise – perhaps with a tutu or a cape or two!

Runners must be aged ten or over. Children aged 10-14 must be accompanied by an adult and those aged 14-16 will need parental consent. There is no upper age limit.
