Family Christmas Night hailed a great success
Wednesday, 11th December 2013.
Over 7,000 people turned out for Haverhill's annual Family Christmas Night on Friday, featuring the Christmas lights switch-on, fairground rides, street entertainers, community stalls and the Best-Dressed Christmas Shop competition.
Local shops stayed open for the evening to benefit from the crowds, and the evening was topped off with a firework spectacular on the Recreation Ground.
Event organiser Nick Keeble said: "What a turnout! The crowds at the lights switch-on, Family Christmas Night and the fireworks were immense.
"We estimate that well over 7,000 were there for the fireworks and we have had some very positive feedback about the display. We are grateful to Haverhill Running Club for providing stewards for the event and also to the 20-plus local organisations that had stalls in the town centre."
Town clerk Will Austin said: "I'm delighted at the excellent reaction to our new lights scheme which is certainly eye-catching and unique.
"The designs from the Haverhill primary schoolchildren were cheered loudly as they were turned on and I think the town can be proud of their lights this year."
Haverhill town mayor Cllr Roger André and the seven winning schoolchildren were joined by Katie Bass, who is playing Snow White in the Arts Centre pantomime (December 21-28), at the switch-on.
