Failing school 'already on the right tracks'

By Jo Deeks on Thursday, 10th February 2000.

SUFFOLK County Council has confirmed Castle Hill Middle School in Haverhill has been classed as a failing school, but says improvements have already been made.
Inspectors from the Office for Standards in Education who visited the school last April said it required special measures.
This meant it should be given extra support from the Local Education Authority.
Inspectors made a follow-up visit in December and commented positively on the action plan being implemented, which was drawn up to address the issues they identified.
They said reasonable progress had been made with regard to aspects of the plan.
Inspectors still highlighted a number of key areas for development, including pupils' skills in speaking and listening and some teaching, which was unsatisfactory in addressing pupils' needs.
Though greatly improved since summer 1999, Standard Assessment Test results were below those of similar schools.
Staff at the school were praised by inspectors who said: "Teachers are working hard and show a high level of commitment to the school."
