Factory worker killed himself
Thursday, 28th June 2001.
A YOUNG factory worker from Haverhill who had suffered from depression was found hanging in his room, an inquest has heard.
Robert Walker, 25, was discovered at his home at Chainey Pieces, Haverhill, last October.
At a resumed inquest at Bury St Edmunds, Kevin McCarthy, assistant deputy coroner for Greater Suffolk, recorded a verdict that Mr Walker had taken his own life.
In a written statement, read at the inquest, Timothy Morgan said he had known Mr Walker since they were about 12 and went to school together.
They leased the house together and Mr Walker had worked at Grampian Foods at Little Wratting.
"He was a very quiet man who kept himself to himself, but had suffered from depression in the past," Mr Morgan said.
Mr Morgan last saw his friend on Friday night when he got home from work. Mr Walker did not say much but had been drinking and went up to his bedroom.
Mr Morgan did not see Mr Walker when he got home on Saturday but heard a television on in his room.
Early on Sunday morning Mr Morgan knocked on the door, but went in when he got no reply and found his friend hanging by a belt round his neck from the wardrobe door.
A letter from Mr Walker's GP confirmed he had suffered from depression and made an earlier suicide attempt in 1997.
