Facelift aims to transform estate

WORK could start next year on a scheme to replace an empty pub and run-down block of flats and shops at Haverhill with new shops and bungalows.
Suffolk Housing Society has applied to St Edmundsbury Borough Council for planning consent to re-develop Blair Parade on the Parkway Estate.
The plan involves demolishing the former Standard pub, which has been closed and boarded up for many years and was bought earlier this year by St Edmundsbury. Two new shops with three flats over the top would then be built on the site.
Once this first phase is completed, the existing Chinese takeaway and post office general store would be moved into the new shops and the old ones demolished. Six bungalows would then be built on the that site.
Janet Crome, Development Director for Suffolk Housing, said they hoped to start work on the scheme after April 2001 if planning consent was granted. One of the bungalows would be wheelchair accessible and the others would be two-bedroomed.
Suffolk Housing was acting as development agents for St Edmundsbury, who would nominate tenants for the bungalows.
It would be quite a lengthy rolling programme of work and quite expensive because of the demolition work involved.
"It will create two nice modern shops with a place for people to stop outside, plus the bungalows which there is a demand for in Haverhill.
"It will tidy up the whole corner for the benefit of the community," Ms Crome said.
