Expected sell-out for “New Seattle’s” band contest
By Martin Chapman on Tuesday, 18th September 2001.
John Peel, during his Radio 1 show, called Bury St Edmunds "the new Seattle" for its up-and-coming vibrant band scene and even featured a couple of local bands.
Among them was Miss Black America, winners of last year's BurySOUND band competition, who will be guesting at the final of this year's event.
But before that fateful night, on December 2, there's three heats that bands including Haverhill’s Oblivion and winners of the Haverhill Rock Competition, Ruperts Tartan Scarf have to battle through. This year's competition looks like being the best yet, with a record number of entries. Twelve local bands have made it through the first selection process and one winner from each heat will go through to the final.
Haverhill based Oblivion will line up alongside Fab Jansen, Miss Spelt Yoof, and Start Living for the first heat on October 13, whilst alongside Rupert’s Tartan Scarf on November 16 will be Becky Jago, Bone Idol and Nice Guy Dave. The second heat on October 26 will be between Blue Gandhi, Für Elise, Picture of Innocence and The Dawn Parade.
Last year, saw most of the heats selling out well in advance and the organisers are advising people to book early.
Tickets cost £5.50 on the door or £4.50 in advance and are available from Bury St Edmunds Bus and Coach Station, St Andrew's Street North, Hardcore Hobbies and Sunrise, in St John's Street, and Sounds Plus, in Risbygate Street.
CAPTION: Miss Black America, winners of last year’s BurySOUND competition, who will be guesting at this year’s final.
