Estate plans nearer

LATEST plans for a major homes development at Hales Barn in Haverhill, which would delete the line of a proposed northern relief road, are being recommended for approval by planners.
Wilcon Homes submitted amended plans for a residential development, estimated at 200 to 250 homes, a middle school, open space and community facilities, on around 62 acres at Hales Barn Farm.
Access would be via Howe Road, with either traffic lights or a roundabout.
Residents raised a petition in protest at an earlier plan for a larger 105 acre site, which included the provision of a northern relief road linking the main Cambridge and Bury St Edmunds roads.
The road would have linked to Ann Suckling Road, close to homes there, and residents wanted it moved further away.
Members of St Edmundsbury Borough Council's Planning Committee will today be recommended to approve the plan, which removes land to the north east and deletes the link road between Withersfield Road and Wratting Road.
A report to councillors said plans had been amended so the route of the proposed road could be determined at a later date, before the remainder of the land was developed.
Developers would have to enter an agreement to contribute towards the cost of the road when it was provided, as well as towards school places and public transport improvements.
Haverhill Town Council and some residents said they would prefer a roundabout to traffic lights at the Howe Road entrance to the site.
Councillors were told this would be determined at the detailed planning stage.
