Enriching Lives Through Learning
Thursday, 22nd March 2007.
Enrichment through learning was the theme for a recent business meeting held at The Fox in Haverhill. Over thirty representatives from local businesses listened to three presentations on the different learning opportunities available in the area, at this Haverhill Chamber of Commerce event on March 7th.
Lyn Hannant from Suffolk Professional Development Centre (PDC) spoke about the importance of literacy, numeracy and language skills in the workplace. Barbara Adshead from Haverhill Branch, West Suffolk College, followed Lyn with a presentation on the opportunities for adult education in Haverhill.
The final speaker was Dr Penny Cavenagh, Associate Dean for Postgraduate and CPD from University Campus Suffolk. Penny spoke about how the plans for the new university were developing and the anticipated impact that it would have on learning opportunities in Suffolk.
Karen McGerty, Membership Co-ordinator for the Chamber commented: “The Fox provided a great venue for this event, the food was excellent.
"Training and learning can often be quite a dry topic but this was definitely not the case at this event, the use of humour really did bring the message home. I hope that local businesses will take advantage of the Skills for Life training and that all of us will make more of the fantastic resource we have in the Haverhill Branch of West Suffolk College. The University Campus Suffolk building looks stunning and will bring economic as well as educational benefits to the county.”
The next Chamber event on 3rd April will examine the implications of the new smoke free law coming into effect in England on 1st July 2007.
Paul Cammiss, from local solicitors Adams Harrison, will talk about what employers, managers and those in control of premises and vehicles need to be aware of in relation to the new law.
Haverhill Golf Club in Coupals Road provides the venue for the event, which is at 6.00pm for a 6.30pm start.
Please book your place by Tuesday 27th March.
