Encouragement for Christmas weekend of events
Tuesday, 15th December 2009.
Last weekend's seasonal events were generally well enough supported for organisers and sponsors Haverhill Town Council to look at continuing with the new extended format.
For the first time this year events were spread over three days.
Town council arts and leisure manager Nick Keeble said the new format had been well received and they had had some good feedback on it.
More than 600 people used the ice rink on the market square over Saturday and Sunday, while Saturday's pop concert there attracted a 'reasonable' number of people on a cold night, many of whom stayed throughout, Mr Keeble said.
Family Christmas Night on Friday started slowly but built up to the usual large crowds by the time it came to the firework finale.
"The weather was okay, which helped," he said, "and the feedback from the entertainers was good.
"We will have to consider whether we can sustain a three-day event, and what we can include within it. I think the general feeling is that the fireworks are better on the Friday night.
"But it was a long weekend and we don't have many staff, so it led to people working very long hours. It might be possible to pack it all into two day, but there were more people in town on Sunday than normally, and part of the reason for doing it is to draw people in."
