Election race kicks off
By Martin Chapman on Monday, 14th May 2001.
AFTER months of speculation and anticipation the race for Labour's second term in Government is on with dissolving of Parliament today. For the Suffolk West seat, which includes Haverhill there are four candidates who have declared themselves as standing.
They are (in alphabetical order):
Will Burrows, for the UK Independence Party
Michael Jefferys for Labour
Robin Martlew for the Liberal Democrats
Richard Spring for the Conservative Party.
Michael Jefferys and Richard Spring are currently the only two candidates, who stood for this seat at the last election.
The seat was previously held by Richard Spring with a majority of only 1,867 (or 3.8%). However the main issue in this election could possibly turnout, which in the last General Election in 1997 was over 70%, above the national average.
Polling day on Thursday June 7 will also see the elections for the County Council.
The candidates are:
for Haverhill North:
Laurence Gerard Martin Kiernan (Labour)
Adam Whittaker (Conservative)
and for Haverhill South:
Maggie Lee (Labour)
Anthony Leonard Sutton (Conservative)
