Elderly couple see off masked and armed burglars
Monday, 4th October 2010.
An elderly couple fought off masked burglars armed with a knife who got into their home in Haverhill on Friday evening.
Suffolk police are appealing for information following the aggravated burglary at the home of a couple in their 70s.
At around 7.15pm two people, believed to be male, entered the house in Downs Place through the front door. They were wearing dark clothing and ski masks and one had a knife.
The man was pushed to the floor and the woman tried to call police but had the phone taken from her. The man managed to push the offenders from the house with a chair and they ran off towards Crowland Road.
The couple were extremely shaken by this incident and the man suffered minor bruising. The only item stolen was the telephone handset.
A man was seen at the top of the steps that provide access to Downs Place shortly after the offenders left the house.
The man dropped and then picked up something before running towards Crowland Road.
This man is described as white, aged around 25, of slim build, between 5ft 6in and 6ft, and bald with a thin pointy face. He appeared agitated and was wearing a light-coloured padded jacket.
Det Sgt Ann Naylor said: “This type of incident is extremely rare, and the couple are being supported by police and the local community as they recover from their ordeal.
"While we would not recommend anyone putting themselves at risk by challenging offenders, the couple were very brave in forcing these people out of their house.
"I would urge anyone with any information about this incident to come forward.”
Calls should be made to DS Naylor at West Suffolk CID on 01284 774100 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
