Eight flats for elderly
Friday, 29th November 2002.
EIGHT more flats for frail and elderly people are to be provided at Shearman Court in Haverhill.
A scheme costing £733,877 has been approved by members of St Edmundsbury Borough Council’s Cabinet, who were told that it had already been granted planning permission.
Housing 21 will provide £310,333 towards the cost of the scheme, with £295,199 coming from the Housing Corporation and the remaining £128,345 as a Social Housing grant from St Edmundsbury.
A report to the Cabinet said Phases 1 and 2 of Shearman Court provided 51 flats, including 13 with extra care for frail and elderly tenants. Managed by Housing 21, the scheme was very successful and had a significant waiting list of local people wanting to move in.
There was a lack of this type of accommodation in Haverhill and it had become a priority to meet the growing demands of the elderly people in the southern part of the borough. The new accommodation will include two wheelchair-accessible flats.
