East European gang of thieves flee empty-handed

Monday, 8th April 2013.

Police have warned retailers to be on their guard after an attempted distraction theft in a shop in Haverhill on Saturday.

Five people, described as being of Eastern European appearance, attempted to steal from the till by distracting a staff member at Ziess clothing store in Queen Street.

Police were called and were on the scene almost immediately from the nearby police station, but the people had left empty-handed.

There were three men and two women, the women with long black hair and dressed in what police described as 'traditional Romanian dress', long and black.

PCSO Kayla Packman said they wanted retailers to be aware that thieves might be operating in the area.

* Police would also like to talk to the owner of a large sandy-coloured dog which bit a passer-by in Queen Street on Saturday lunchtime.

A woman was bitten in the thigh as she was walking along the street and passed a man with the dog.

She confronted the man but he denied the incident and walked away.

The woman, herself a dog-trainer, suffered a large bruise from the bite. PCSO Packman said: "This was a nasty injury and we would like to ask dog-owners to to muzzle the dogs in public if they bite.

"Dog-owners know if their dogs bite and they should take care for the safety of their dog and the public.

"I received a nasty bite on the finger while delivery information leaflets several weeks ago. If you know your dog bites put out a sign warning people, or if you are out in public with it, muzzle it."
