Duxford Tank-tastic Fun for Father's Day
Tuesday, 9th June 2009.
Celebrate Father’s Day in style at Imperial War Museum Duxford with the Military Vehicle Show on Sunday 21 June. Experience the sheer power of some of the biggest tanks as well as the more quirky peculiarities of smaller vehicles such as jeeps and 1940s ambulances.
Visitors can get up close to vehicles normally on static display in the Land Warfare Hall, including the Conqueror, SU100, Abbot and Scorpion.
Over 230 vehicles will be on display on the day, a larger display than 2008, ranging from motorcycles to tank transporters and all sizes and shapes of vehicle in between, including a Diamond T Transporter, 6-wheeled fire engines and a range of British tanks.
There will also be a fascinating range of historic vehicles on display from the RAF and
the opportunity to see the Centurion Mark 3 tank featured on the Discovery Channel’s ‘Tank Overhaul’ programme. Also, actively running for the first time since its rebuild and restoration will be the OT210, a Czechoslovakian half-track, based on Second World War German designs, but built post-Second World War. The UK Tank Club will be presenting a wide range of remote-control tanks.
The owners of these amazing vehicles will be on hand to chat to visitors, giving a knowledgeable insight into the history of the military vehicle and passing on their infectious enthusiasm for their own vehicle.
At 2.00pm there is the opportunity to see the military vehicles in action as they take part in a cavalcade along Duxford’s runway, with accompanying commentary. Following this, one of the displaying military vehicles will be awarded Best in Show. There will also be a Military and Aviation Book Fair in the American Air Museum, plus the opportunity to ride in a tank between 10.30am and 1.00pm.
Burma Star veterans will be situated in the Forgotten War exhibition in the Land Warfare Hall, where they will chat to visitors about their wartime experiences.
Imperial War Museum Duxford’s Fire and Security team will present a thrilling mock rescue, and there will be displays of radio equipment. The Land Warfare Hall will be open as usual, with many more vehicles on display for enthusiasts of all ages.
