Doorstep conmen steal cash from pensioner
Thursday, 21st March 2002.
An 86-year-old woman at Haverhill has had cash stolen from her home after being duped by bogus callers.
Suffolk police are repeating warnings for people to be on their guard after the latest incident at Clayhive Drive at around 10.15am on Monday morning.
A man called at the pensioner's home and told her there had been an explosion close by. He told her that he needed to check the water supply to make sure it had not been contaminated.
The woman went with him through to the kitchen where he asked her to boil some water. Around 10 minutes later he said he was happy with the water and left.
It is thought that while the woman was distracted, a second offender entered the property and made a search of the rooms. It was later discovered that a quantity of cash had been stolen.
The offender is described as white, in his 20s, with fair hair and complexion. He was wearing blue overalls and he spoke very quickly.
Police are urging people to be vigilant and not let any unknown callers into their homes without checking for official identification first.
If in doubt, keep them out and dial 999.
Anyone with information should contact DC Brent Bottomley at Haverhill Police Station on (01284) 774100 or Crimestoppers on (0800) 555 111.
