Don't forget to recycle if you are spring cleaning

Wednesday, 28th April 2010.

If you're spring cleaning this weekend, there is some advice from Suffolk County Council, who operate the county's waste tips.

The May bank holiday is, for many, a great opportunity to have a clear-up, both indoors and out, and it’s a busy time at the council’s tips, or household waste recycling centres (HWRCs), as they are officially called.

The county council has 18 HWRCs across the county giving Suffolk residents the opportunity to recycle their waste and avoid landfill where possible.

You can recycle a whole host of materials including paper, cardboard, wood, green waste, metal, glass bottles, textiles, cardboard based food and drink cartons such as Tetra-Pak, cooking oil, electrical items and old fridges and freezers.

It helps enormously if you have sorted your waste before you arrive so that your time on site is reduced.

The council does not have to accept waste from DIY work such as building and home improvements. Tips will accept up to two bags of rubble or soil per household per day. Where you expect to create more waste than this, the council encourages the hire of skips or skip bags.

Haverhill's household waste recycling centre is in Coupals Close, off Chalkstone Way, and is open from 8am to 6pm.
