DIY enthusiasts warned over fire safety
Friday, 29th March 2002.
The Easter break provides a traditional opportunity for many to turn their hand at Do-It-Yourself jobs around the house.
DIY fans are being asked to think about fire safety this Easter.
Martyn Thorpe, community fire safety officer, said: “Warmer weather means more DIY takes place. Fires associated with DIY range from accidents with blow torches to electrical equipment which has been stored in a damp garage or shed over winter.”
“We would urge people to think twice before they do any DIY and be more aware of potential fire hazards. We can offer expert advice and modern DIY superstores can also offer guidance.”
Suffolk Fire service published the following tips for potential do-it-yourselfers this Easter.
· Check you have the correct tool for the job.
· Make sure children and pets are safe and that obstructions are removed from your workplace.
· If you have to check or repair an electrical tool, turn it off at the mains. Don’t be tempted to save time because you are some distance from the power switch.
· Always uncoil electrical extension cables fully, as these can overheat and cause a fire.
· Never use multi-way adapters when working with high amp tools.
· Gas appliances should only be repaired by an approved contractor.
· Flammable liquids should be used correctly by following manufacturer's instructions, secured in containers, and used in small quantities well away from the house and other risks such as naked flames or cigarettes.
· Make sure they is enough ventilation when using adhesives and flammable liquids by opening windows and doors and always ensure that no naked flames or power tools are close by.
· Read safety instructions in full.
