Demolition heralds new car park
Monday, 17th December 2001.
BULLDOZERS are moving in to the former Cleales site, south of the High Street, Haverhill, to clear the area ready for it to be turned into a new town centre car park.
The site, formerly used for light engineering and bought by St Edmundsbury Borough Council in 1999, will be turned into a 110-space pay and display car park, covered by lighting and CCTV. The Council is investing more than £400,000 in the high quality short stay shopper's car park, which will add to the vitality and viability of the town centre.
Transport and Works Committee Chairman, Cllr Martin Milnes, said:
"This is another example of how St Edmundsbury is working to secure a bright future for Haverhill. The town is growing and we need to encourage further investment in its centre - providing convenient, easily accessible and safe car parking is part of that process. "
Work starts around the middle of this week to demolish some buildings on site - businesses previously working there have now relocated - and completely clear the area.
The access road to the site is also used for rear loading access by a number of shops and the Council has been liaising with them to make sure they are not inconvenienced by vehicles needed for the demolition work also using the road. People who use the road to park will also be given leaflets warning them that they will need to park elsewhere while demolition work is being carried out.
This phase of the work, which will leave the site clear for redevelopment, is costing £30,000 and it's expected that work will start on the new car park around February so shoppers should be able to use it in the summer.
