Deaf students win edcational awards
Thursday, 10th June 1999.
Top marks . . . deaf CRC student Julia Salter is proud of her award.
Two deaf students have been recognised for their academic achievement and outstanding progress in education.
Julia Salter, 19, from Haverhill, has been studying for two years at Cambridge Regional College for an A-level in maths and accountancy and she is due to take her exams next week.
She was presented with a glass bowl, engraved with her name, by the Royal National Institute for Deaf People.
And Rita Boreham, a mature student at the college, is studying on a Steps to Work programme.
She is partially deaf and has worked hard to make progress. She was presented with a shield by the Cambridgeshire Deaf Association.
Julia, who works with the help of a sign language interpreter, said her course had been very hard work but she was modest about her achievements.
She said: "I work hard, the same as everyone else so I don't see why I should get an award - but I am very proud of it."
Julia said the staff at the college had helped her get through the course with their friendly and helpful attitude. She plans to get a job in Haverhill when she has completed her exams.
