Daughter thanks rescuers for saving mum in blaze alert

Thursday, 14th March 2002.

A woman whose mother had to be evacuated from her home in the early hours of the morning has thanked neighbours who came to her rescue.

Shirley Try, who is in her 60s, had to leave her home at Falcon Close, Haverhill, at around 3am on Sunday, March 3, after a wheelie bin fire spread to the wall of her flat, which has gas pipes inside it.

Her daughter Tina, of Dovehouse Road, believes neighbours who spotted the fire and got her mother out of her flat could well have saved her life.

Tina said Danny Wakelin and his wife, who live in the next court, called the fire brigade and also got other residents out of their homes.

“I will be writing to them, but I wanted to thank them publicly in the paper. If they had not spotted the fire and it went on burning, my mum might not be here today. She had to leave in just her nightie and they got her a coat and some slippers.

“She sat in the front of the fire engine, but she would not phone me until 8am because she knew I had been up the night before when my little boy was ill. I flew round there as soon as a heard how upset she was, but she is OK now.

“Hopefully if the people who started the fire read it. they might realise what they did could have killed people. If the fire had got to the gas pipes the whole place could have gone up. My mum is quite a strong person, but it made her think that she might not be here to see her grandson any more,” Mrs Try said.
