Curly locks will be sacrificed in memnory of aunt
Monday, 7th March 2011.
Haverhill leisure attendant Palesa Hyde will donate ten inches of her hair to help children suffering from hair loss and raise thousands of pounds for cancer research in memory of her aunt.
Palesa, 25, who works at Haverhill Leisure Centre has set up donation boxes at the centre for people to sponsor her fund-raising drive.
She will donate her ten inches of her hair to Locks Of Love, a charity which provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children, and in the process aims to raise £2,000 for Cancer Research.
Palesa, of Duddery Road, Haverhill, is donating her hair in memory of her aunt Gwen Sevier, from Portsmouth, who died from liver cancer in November.
She said: “I was very close to my aunt and her passing has been the first death in my family that I have had to try to come to terms with. She was the life and soul of the family and really held us all together, so I wanted to do something in her memory.
“My thick curly hair is really my trademark but I have a lot of hair, it will grow back, and I will help a lot of people by doing this. Cancer affects so many people.”
Palesa will be fund-raising over the next few months to meet her target and will face the clippers on Saturday, June 25, at the Leisure Centre surrounded by supportive colleagues and friends.
She added: “My colleagues think I am insane but they are really supportive of what I am trying to achieve and have been helping me collect donations.”
Warren Smyth, chief executive of Abbeycroft Leisure, which runs the Leisure Centre, said: “You cannot fail to be moved by the fact that Palesa is fundraising in memory of her aunt. Most of us have been affected by this terrible disease in one way or another during our lives.
"I think Palesa’s positive outlook and her drive to raise money in this way by losing her hair is amazing and we will be supporting her all the way.”
