Crowds flock to sun-drenched historic vehicle rally
Monday, 15th July 2013.
On Sunday over 150 vintage and classic vehicles descended on sunny Haverhill for the annual Historic Transport Rally and Road Run.
This now annual event – organised by Haverhill Town Council in partnership with the Historic Commercial Vehicle Society – was a huge success, attracting almost 2,000 people.
The show featured a mix of commercial and military vehicles, motor cycles and domestic cars of all ages.
Over 40 of these took part in a road run around Haverhill and surrounding villages. As well as free entry, hundreds of visitors were treated to tours of the town on vintage buses.
Town mayor Cllr Roger André opened the event and awarded prizes for the various categories of vehicles on display.
Cllr André said: “This event was a fabulous example of how an enjoyable day out can also educate and inform.
"The exhibitors work so hard to protect this important part of our heritage, and we value their willingness to bring history to life by bring their vehicles to a free, public event.
"I had a wonderful time and particularly enjoyed the bus tour, while learning a great deal about how transport has developed over the years. We thank the society for their efforts, and look forward to hosting the event again next year.”
Although mainly situated in the glorious sunshine across the Town Hall Car Park, the activities extended inside Haverhill Arts Centre, where free cinema screenings celebrated transportation history.
This event was just one among many included in the town council’s Summer In Haverhill programme, details of which can be found at http://www.haverhill-tc.gov.uk/pages/365.htm
