Crowds attend town's Remembrance ceremony
Monday, 12th November 2012.
The sun shone on Haverhill's Remembrance observances yesterday afternoon as a large crowd once again turned out to watch and follow the parade.
The uniformed organisations formed up with standards to parade from the Arts Centre to the cemetery, being joined at Lower Downs Slade by civic dignitaries and followed by the crowd.
At the cemetery the Act of Remembrance was led by the rector of Haverhill, Canon Ian Finn, while the Mayor of St Edmundsbury, Cllr Tim Marks, and the Mayor of Haverhill, Cllr Pat Hanlon, led the wreath-laying.
Cllr Hanlon wore the official mayoral robes for the event, having recently told members of Haverhill Town Council he was still deciding whether to do so or not.
His predecessor, Cllr Maureen Byrne, did not wear the robes on Remembrance Day, which caused controversy with some councillors, who had specifically asked Cllr Hanlon what he intended to do.
After the wreath-laying, the parade marched back to St Mary's Church for aspecial civic service to mark the day, which again included the Act of Remembrance.
Music was provided by Haverhill Silver Band, conducted by its musical director Mark Ager, and St Mary's Church choir led by the church's director of music Richard Hart at the organ.
