Crime warning as warm weather continues
Thursday, 12th July 2001.
SUFFOLK Police is urging householders to remember home security as the warm weather continues.
Home owners are being reminded to keep their property secure even if they are only popping out for a short time or are just in the garden.
Crime reduction officer PC Steve Barrett said people needed to be aware that opportunistic burglars could see an open window as an invitation to try their luck.
He said: "There has been an increasing number of burglaries where the offenders actually gain entry through these open windows while family members are in the garden at the rear or side of the house.
"The advice on this occasion is that, when you are in the garden, please make sure all doors and windows you cannot see are securely closed and locked.
"Most of this sort of crime is opportunism and, even in a county like Suffolk, where the crime rate is relatively low, simple measures like this can help reduce the risk of being a victim of crime in the future."
Anyone who spots anyone acting suspiciously in his or her area is asked to contact Suffolk Police immediately by calling (01473) 613500.
